What exactly does art smell like? According to Loc Dong, a senior perfumer at International Flavors and Fragrances, it’s a combination of slightly odd ingredients like ambrette seeds, cashmeran and kaffir lime leaves mixed with a heady dose of rose absolute Bulgaria.
A hundred bottles of WM-Watermill Paradiso 2010 Scent — Dong’s sultry-smelling, limited-edition fragrance — will be sold for $500 each at tomorrow night’s annual Watermill Center benefit Coach Outlet Online, with proceeds benefiting the artist Robert Wilson’s famed Hamptons arts center. Dong lived at the center for two intense weeks, collaborating with 60 of the center’s artists Coach Outlet Online, who weighed in on the unisex scent before creating and decorating the one-off glass flacons by hand. (One bottle was painted using an artist’s hair as a brush.)
Ten lucky bidders at the live auction will win special versions of the bottle, painted and personalized for them by Wilson himself. “I’m best known as someone who works in the theater Coach Outlet Online,” Wilson says, “and in theater, we usually think of visual and audio sentences as the primary focus. But smells are also an essential part of our experience.” What fragrance does he wear when he’s not hawking custom ones for his charity? Vetiver Extraordinaire from Frederic Malle. Call (212) 253-7484 for tickets or go to watermillcenter.org/benefit for more information.
