With the Italian lira pegged to the US dollar from 1927 to 1934 at Lire 19 per USD 1, relative bargains were available for the taking. At the same time, Pateks were sold in the States for approximately double the price, due to the US retail prices set by the Henri Stern Watch Agency and mandatory import duty.

The US market was most certainly buying less luxury timepieces at the time, too. The Depression had left the US economy in shambles.
