Wire have been a band for as long as the lifetimes of many KEXP listeners — having started as a punk band in 1976, releasing three seminal masterworks in the three following years (Pink Flag in ’77, Chairs Missing in ’78 and 154 in ’79), reinventing themselves as a post-punk band in the late 80′s, and then carrying the flame throughout the last decade. Thirty five years later, three-fourths of the founding members remain: guitarist and vocalist Colin Newman, bassist and vocalist Graham Lewis, and drummer Robert Grey (né Robert Gotobed) — only original guitarist Bruce Gilbert is out of the current lineup — and the band continues to be as vital and dynamic. Red Barked Tree, the band’s twelfth album, is a musical mix of styles, from thrash to acoustic folk, and is lyrically as incisive and politically charged as ever. Recently discount soccer jerseys, Wire stopped by KEXP to perform three songs from the new album and an older classic, “Kidney Bingos,” from their ’88 album, A Bell Is a Cup… Until It Is Struck.
