Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is The New Hypocrisy, a new single by The Radio Dept. on Labrador Records.
The process of how a band is conceived seems to transcend the globe. Much like a classic American indie band story, The Radio Dept. out of Lund, Sweden, formed when two schoolmates found common ground in the creation of music in 1995 Originally made up of Elin Almered and Johan Duncanson, the band as it is has had a liquid lineup with founding member Duncanson holding down the fort. Labrador Records signed The Radio Dept. after their appearance in a Sonic Magazine sampler cheap sports jerseys, and they finally got widespread cred. After Lesser Matters, their official debut album in spring 2003 hit Swedish sales charts, they became one of Labrador’s standout artists.
With “The New Improved Hypocrisy,” they keep up with the wonderfully ambient, soundscape mood they’ve been known for (as on their other recently featured Song of the Day). The song, though, is a bit more politically charged as it takes aim at the right-wing political movement that has gained a strong foothold in Sweden and that, according to the song authentic soccer jerseys, has yet to deliver on its promises to people and has pulled away from the rest of the European community. The more left-leaning Radio Dept. offered this song for free on the Labrador website right before the general elections in Sweden last month. In light of our own recent Midterm Elections, KEXP listeners may also find something to relate to with the song’s lyrics:

“The New Improved Hypocrisy” is, we hope, a taste of an album to come. There is a double-disc collection of singles, Passive Aggressive: Singles 2002- 2010 slated to release in the next year.
