Friday Nite Spotlight Thunderheist – Thunderheist

Thunderheist

When Montreal producer Graham Zilla sent an MP3 of a song to a friend way back in 2006, it accidentally ended up in the box of fellow Spank Rock fan, Toronto singer Isis Salem. Isis thought the song was meant as an invitation to perform, so she recorded her own voice over the instrumental breaks and sent it back to Zilla.

Zilla was so impressed by her work that he wrote her immediately, and the two joined forces digitally, recorded a demo and named themselves Thunderheist.

On their website, the band defines their name as:

“The act of stealing another’s thunder, to trump another with something far more superior.”

Thunderheist’s first full length just came out in March, and I’m guessing it’s gonna be the dance CD of the summer. Some of these tracks the band has been working on for years, “Jerk It” was even put up for a video contest in 2008. Where fans were challenged to create the best visual experience for the song. Here’s the winning entry.

Thunderheist are on European and U.S. tour now and through the summer. They play Studio B in Brooklyn on June 19, and we sure hope to see them in Seattle sometime soon.

Join DJ Michele Myers Fridays at 9pm for Nite Life on KEXP. Every Friday at midnight she does this album spotlight, telling a story and playing 3 songs from the record. Michele also produces KEXP Documentaries and hosts Wake Up Thursdays from 6-9am for KEXP in NYC on Radio New York 91.5FM.
